People v R.S.
Charges:
Possession of Cannabis 720 ILCS 550/4 (1,500 grams)

Outcome: CASE DISMISSED – FINDING OF NO PROBABLE CAUSE

Description: R.S., an Oregon resident driving through Illinois was stopped by a Cook County Sheriff. After being stopped and providing proper documentation, the sheriff summoned a drug sniffing dog that signaled presence of cannabis in the roof-top compartment above the vehicle. During preliminary hearing, attorney Bhatt got the officer to admit that he could not provide details as to the nature of the training the drug sniffing dog had received. Officer could not tell the court if the dog was trained as a “drug dog” or “bomb dog” or as to what signals the dog would provide as evidence of drugs.
