PEOPLE v A.S.
A.S., a resident of Indiana, was in Chicago for the weekend with her husband when she was pulled over in her vehicle for a traffic violation. During the traffic stop police recovered a firearm in A.S.’s purse and charged her with felony charges of possession of a weapon (720 ILCS 5/24-1. Attorney Purav Bhatt successfully argued that according to Illinois law, and out-of-state residents is it legal compliance with Illinois law as long as they are lawfully allowed to carry a firearm in their own home state. The court agreed and dismissed all charges against A.S. Attorney Bhatt then compelled Chicago police to return the unlawfully seized firearm back to A.S.
