People v. CR (Rolling Meadows, Illinois)

In August 2024, criminal defense attorney Purav Bhatt’s client was in Chicago for work. He was stopped by police officers and his vehicle was searched. Searching the vehicle, police recovered a taser. They charged Purav Bhatt’s client with unlawful use of a weapon (UUW).

The Law Office of Purav Bhatt was able to get the case completely thrown out before it even could go to trial. That is because criminal defense attorney Purav Bhatt argued a pre-trial motion that while a taser does constitute a weapon under the statute, the fact that it was disassembled at the time of discovery and in a car compartment, it was akin to a properly disassembled firearm and stored correctly for travel. Therefore, it was not illegal. The Judge completely agreed with Purav Bhatt and dismissed the entire case, so the client was free to walk out of the courthouse that day and recover his property.
