Down Michigan Avenue in Chicago, stores are seeing retail theft and shoplifting cases but in a different way. Across Cook County, incidents are down 2%. The group that has shown an increase in retail theft arrests are juveniles.
“Flash Mobs” are groups of individuals who utilize social media tools such as Facebook and Twitter to coordinate activities at a certain time and date. Oftentimes, these coordinated activities are legal and harmless. However, authorities are saying that groups are using social media to coordinate shoplifting and retail theft by disseminating a desired location and time to commit retail thefts.
