Verdict! $400,000 Jury Verdict
Attorney Purav Bhatt secured a verdict for his client in the amount of $400,000. In a five-day jury trial, my client sued the Board of Education for the City of Chicago for a breach of contract. Babbage Net School, a company that provided secondary education services to school districts throughout the country was indicted by the US Attorney’s Office in Chicago for fraud. Upon learning of the indictment, one of Babbage’s clients, the Chicago Public Schools, continued to accept secondary education services from Babbage.
As a result of the pending federal case, Chicago Public Schools and the Board of Education refused to pay for those services received. With the federal criminal case ongoing, attorney Purav Bhatt argued to keep the pending criminal case, its investigation and related evidence out of the breach of contract trial. Even with the US Attorney’s office assisting opposing counsel in their trial preparation, the jury returned a verdict in favor of our client.
The jury determined that since the Chicago Public Schools received and accepted the secondary education services, they were obligated to pay the amount owed to Babbage Net School.
When asked about the victory, Mr. Bhatt said, “As a criminal defense attorney I don’t usually handle civil matters but I if there is one thing I am, it’s a trial lawyer. This case was the direct result of a federal criminal investigation of my client. This case became part of the representation of my client.”
